Wonder, a 2017 Academy Nominated film starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson features the journey a family makes to find a place in the world for their son diagnosed with Rare medical facial deformity known as ‘mandibulofacial dysostosis’.
Wonder is funny and heartfelt, definitely one to watch with your loved ones. It teaches inclusivity to adults and how we can explain inclusion to our children. The film is a strong reminder of how children imitate their parents’ perceptions, reactions and comments leading them to exhibit the same in their own lives.
Through Wonder we follow the lives of not just Auggie but his family and friends. We learn why each behaves the way they do and how each person is facing a silent battle. Like his older sister Via, who feels overlooked as her parents’ lives are so wrapped up in helping Auggie adjust to the world. Or Jack Will who struggles between wanting to fit in with the popular children and being his authentic true self with Auggie.
The film also portrays how Auggie’s mother pauses her PhD to raise and homeschool him, showing the sacrifice women very often have to make and are sometimes punished for when attempting to re-enter the workforce.
The script is filled with quotes that have the power to change the way you see people and life. This review might make it seem like the movie is purely inspirational but it’s also very humorous. Owen Wilson with his witty and boyish charm keeps you smiling throughout!
Inclusion we learn in this film is about building human connections without dismissing someone’s story. This movie shows us how at every age there is room to learn and grow.
